WHAT CAN WE DO?

A Special care counsellor is... 

The code of ethics of the Quebec Association of Speciale Care Counsellors (QASCC) defines Educators as: "Professional[s] who intervene[s] with people or groups of people of any age experiencing or who are likely to experience a variety of adjustment difficulties in the areas of mental health, social services and education. The specialized educator evaluates and accompanies a person or a group of people through situations of daily life, with educational relationship and helping relationship and by means of observation and intervention techniques. »

A Special care counsellor  does... 

According to the competency framework related to the exercise of the profession of special care counsellors in Quebec produced for the QASCC, the work of an educator is:  
 

  • Intervene with people or groups of people of all ages experiencing or likely to  experiencing various adjustment difficulties in the field of mental health, social services and education;

  • Observe a person or a group of people with psychosocial adjustment difficulties in their experience and   assess their needs;

  • Pursue objectives of social integration and personal development in the fields of prevention, education and rehabilitation;

  • Evaluate and accompany a person or a group of people through daily life  situations , the educational relationship, the helping relationship and by means of observation techniques and intervention;

  • Proceed with screening, estimation, detection and assessment of undiagnosed disorders, so as to prevent, among other things, the installation of significant and persistent deficiencies;

  • Evaluate the suicidal risk and the dangerousness of a person in a crisis situation and act accordingly;

  • Record the data in the file and write progress reports according to the method established in their practice setting or comply with the regulations on record keeping in the context of private practice;

  • Determine an intervention plan for each client assigned to them as part of a planned intervention process.

A special care counsellor intervenes with... 

Still according to the competency framework, educators can intervene with the following populations: 

  • People of any age or groups of people with a developmental disorder, a behavioral disorder and severe behavioral disorder, an oppositional disorder, a sexual deviance problem, a mental health problem, an intellectual disability, a physical deficiency, emotional deficiencies, cognitive, physical and neurological deficits or any psychological and adjustment difficulty;

  • Preschool children who show signs of developmental delay or any adjustment difficulties;

  • Children and young people who have vulnerability factors that may affect their learning, behavior or coping skills;

  • Children and young people whose safety or development is potentially compromised;

  • People of all ages in crisis;

  • People of all ages with a loss of functional or psychosocial autonomy;

  • People of all ages who experience poverty, social isolation, social exclusion and issues of violence;

  • Individuals of any age or groups of individuals struggling with addiction issues, including alcohol, drug and drug abuse issues as well as problems related to compulsive gambling and internet addiction;

  • Offenders, meaning people who are serving a sentence of detention or in the community after being convicted of an offense under a law or regulation.
